Frequently Asked Questions
What we get asked most about the pre-incubation and incubation programs: requirements, costs, intellectual property and support.

01About the programs
What is Startup UNI?
We are the business incubator of Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería, part of its Office of Innovation and Technology Transfer (DITT). We work with technology-based projects through training, mentoring and introductions across the innovation ecosystem.
What is the difference between pre-incubation and incubation?
Pre-incubation (the Impulso program) is eight weeks of intensive training that ends in a first prototype or Minimum Viable Product. It is where to start if you have not validated your idea yet.
Incubation is for ventures that have already built something and need to scale: strengthening the business model and reaching funding and investment opportunities.
Which one is for me?
If you have an idea or an unvalidated project, start with pre-incubation. If you already have a working product, first users or sales, incubation fits better.
If you are unsure, write to startup@uni.edu.pe and we will help you decide before you apply.
When does the next call open?
The dates for each edition are announced on the program's own page and at our information sessions, where we walk through the process and answer questions live.
We also publish every opening in the News section and in the newsletter, so subscribing is the most direct way to hear about it.
02Who can apply
Do I have to be a UNI student?
No. The programs are open to UNI students, graduates, thesis candidates and faculty, and also to people from outside the university.
Belonging to the UNI community or to the Red Universitaria de Incubadoras (RUI) is not a requirement, but it does give you a discount on the registration fee.
Can I apply on my own, without a team?
No. Applications are by teams of two (2) to four (4) people. We look for technical and business skills that complement each other, because that is what keeps a project going.
Do I need to have a business idea already?
Not necessarily. Pre-incubation has two routes: one for teams that arrive with a defined idea, and one for those who do not have it yet and want to build it during the program.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes. Every team member must be over eighteen (18).
Do I need a registered company?
Not for pre-incubation: the program ends in a first prototype, and most teams arrive without having registered anything.
For incubation, check the terms of the current call, which set out the registration requirements.
What is assessed in an application?
Whether the idea can grow: that it is innovative, scalable and answers a market opportunity you can point to.
The make-up of the team counts too, and how committed it really is, because attendance at the sessions is compulsory.
03Costs and payments
Is there a fee?
Yes. Pre-incubation has a registration fee of S/ 500 per whole team, not per person, for teams of two to four people.
There are discounts depending on who is taking part: 20% for UNI students (S/ 400), 15% for UNI faculty and thesis candidates (S/ 425), 10% for UNI graduates (S/ 450) and 15% for students from the Red Universitaria de Incubadoras (S/ 425).
When is it paid and what does it cover?
Final admission to the program depends on paying the fee in full and signing the participation agreement.
The fee covers full access to the training program and the one-to-one mentoring. It is a single payment, valid only for the current edition.
Can I get a refund if I withdraw?
Once the program has started, there is no refund for withdrawing voluntarily or for being excluded over disciplinary or academic breaches.
A proportional refund does apply if Startup UNI cancels, suspends or does not run the program, or substantially reduces what was offered.
Is there a cooling-off period?
Yes. You can cancel and ask for your payment back within fifteen (15) calendar days of paying. The full conditions are in our Terms and Conditions.
Are there prizes or seed capital?
Yes. The programs include seed capital prizes for the standout teams. The amounts and categories for each edition are published on the program page and in its official terms.
04Intellectual property
Does Startup UNI take a share of my company?
No. Everything your team creates during the program (ideas, business models, prototypes, code or content) belongs to the team alone. Startup UNI claims no ownership over the projects and takes no equity.
Can you use my project's name to promote yourselves?
By taking part, the team allows us to mention the project's name, its logo and the members' names for informational, academic and institutional purposes, for example in our portfolio or our publications.
That permission can be withdrawn: tell us explicitly and we will stop using them.
Is my idea protected during the program?
Startup UNI treats as confidential the information teams explicitly mark as such, and participants undertake not to disclose what other teams, mentors or speakers share.
Even so, our practical advice is not to reveal the technical core of your project in open sessions, and to consider protecting it formally where that applies. We can advise you on how.
05During and after the program
What does the support include?
Hands-on training in sessions designed by specialists, covering how to validate the idea and build the first MVP.
Access to UNI's facilities (labs and equipment) and to a network of mentors with experience in technology, business and investment.
Is attendance compulsory?
Yes. Active participation and attendance at every session and activity are required. Repeated absence is grounds for exclusion, and in that case the fee is not refunded.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. Teams that reach the final Demo Day receive an official certificate from Startup UNI.
What is the virtual campus?
It is the DITT platform where you will find the session materials and a record of your progress during the program. You sign in with the credentials we give you at the start.
What happens when the program ends?
Teams that finish can join our startup portfolio and keep receiving calls, event invitations, funding opportunities and introductions to mentors and investors.
If your project has come far enough, applying to the incubation program is the natural next step.
